review: Mission Impossible 3
Aaaarrgh! Parah! Film ini benar benar melanjutkan MI & MI-2… merusak pola yang sudah tertata baik. Ini bukan film tentang IMF, tetapi film tentang Ethan Hunt! Yang susah payah berusaha menyaingi James Bond, tapi gak mampu sendirian, jadi terpaksa minta bantuan teman-temannya.
oke, dosa terbesar MI adalah merusak nama baik Mr. Phelps, yang telah berulang kali menyelamatkan amerika. gw masih belum bisa memaafkan mereka untuk membuat Mr. Phelps menjadi penjahat.
Deviasi lainnya, no guns! hal ini yang membedakan layar lebar dengan serialnya. dalam serialnya yang kita sukai, IMF mendapatkan hasil melalui intricate lies and deceit. the series is about team, there’s no I in team. no guns, no live ammos. padahal lawan mereka adalah orang2 yang tak segan2 membunuh. the stake is high while the probability of success is bordering on nothing, thus the name, Impossible Mission Force.
di layar lebar, agen2nya tak beda dengan pasukan elit, bersenjata lengkap, jago beladiri, dan hanya butuh satu orang, yang lain hanya filler dan pelengkap penderita. agen2 IMF tak segan membunuh lackeys, tapi menangkap susah payah berusaha menangkap gembong kriminalnya.
Plotnya cheesy enough. kriminal memiliki akses ke "doomsday device", IMF harus mencegahnya, tapi ada mata-mata dalam IMF. sounds familiar? tentu…
"the devil is in details", di sini para penulis dan kru MI3 fails miserably. kenapa harus melompat dengan kemungkinan jatuh jika dapat jalan memutar?
Akhirnya dengan sangat menyedihkan, gw bilang penulis ceritanya sudah kehabisan akal dan kreatifitas. saatnya untuk mengakhiri serial MI di layar lebar. Terlalu banyak lubang-lubang yang tak dapat ditepis. kejadian2 tak beralasan yang tak masuk akal. Ingat, MI bukan tentang kejadian yang tak masuk akal, tapi bagaimana sekelompok manusia berupaya untuk membuat hal yang dirasa tak masuk akal menjadi kenyataan.

I just knew from back then…that we are mostly on the same line.
I share the same disappointment ever since the 1st one out.
Mission Impossible is supposed to be a team mission where everyone have their special talents and picked specifically for a mission. Even on the New Mission Impossible TV series…where they have more “fixed” team members, they still allowed additional team members to be involved if her/his skills is required in the mission.
I’ve been wondering…the same thing happened with modern Japanese sentai remake by American…take for example Goggle V (remamber the video tape series?) and Power Rangers…Goggle V in its series, as I recall, usually highlighted different Google team member for each series (stimes Goggle Red, Black, Blue, Yellow and even Pink…) as oppose to Power Rangers, where the hero is usually Ranger Red (or White when he came along to the picture!). Is it another prove of Huntington’s clash of civilization in entertainment.
Even the end of “The Last Samurai” is somehow not very Samurai-esque…by allowing Tom Cruise to return to the village and the wife even when he failed to win the last battle (something a true samurai and samurai’s family will find dishonorable!).
It made me think also…perhaps Tom Cruise have a strong self centered tendency…to be the center of everything, to be portrayed as someone important and heroic even though he utterly failed. Sort of Bonaparte/Hitler Syndrome. Small Person/s with Big Ego. The strong drive to overcompensate their physical limitation (height!)
